Mainframe Modernization
Our first course was offered in November 2019, and it was fully booked immediately. The focus is on how the IBM mainframe offers numerous opportunities for transformation and modernization, making it an attractive platform for future use. Topics include Linux on IBM Z, microservices, application virtualization with containers, agile development, and DevOps.

Motivation / Goals of this Special Seminar
In our customer meetings and training sessions, we consistently observe that many new technologies available in the mainframe environment are either unknown or underutilized by most mainframe-operating companies.
When asking current specialists within these companies about their knowledge of tools like Git and GitHub, ZOWE, or Docker on z/OS, we often encounter blank stares.
Many are also unaware that agile methods and DevOps can be implemented in a mainframe environment. Additionally, the potential for using Spark on IBM z/OS in conjunction with big data and analytics, with highly practical use cases, is only being discussed in a few companies.
Cloud solutions represent another exciting topic. However, which company is willing to entrust critical customer data to cloud providers? A hybrid cloud solution might be an interesting alternative, where critical data (system of record) is stored on a cloud infrastructure within the company's own data center on a secure mainframe, while less critical data and big data environments (system of engagement) are managed in a public cloud. The indispensable interaction between these two is the hybrid cloud.
Java is also playing an increasingly important role on the mainframe. After initial difficulties and various shortcomings, Java now runs demonstrably better on the mainframe than on any other platform. We will explain the reasons for this in the seminar. We will also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the WebSphere Application Server and the Liberty Server, and we will examine various development environments.
We will cover these and other topics (see content description) in this seminar! As always, we will ask registered participants in advance if they would like to see any additional topics that are not yet listed in our description.
Speakers
Wolfram Greis will be the primary speaker and moderator. With over 40 years of mainframe experience in various roles, Wolfram has a unique ability to explain complex technical concepts in an understandable way. He is actively involved in numerous international associations such as ceCMG, GSE, SHARE, and AMC. As an author, he has written a German-language textbook on IBM mainframe architecture.
He shares his extensive knowledge through in-depth technical presentations and various teaching assignments at universities and colleges both domestically and internationally.
Prof. Dr. Philipp Brune will co-moderate and present at this workshop. He belongs to the category of professors who not only master theory but have also gathered practical experience in numerous projects.
Additionally, user contributions will showcase how large companies are positioning themselves in this modernization environment.

Open questions
In advance, all registered participants will be contacted by email to inquire about specific topics they would like to be covered in this seminar and to gauge their expectations. This will add significant value to the seminar for the participants.
The mix of speakers from industry, academia, manufacturers, and end-users guarantees a unique combination of sound theoretical background knowledge and proven practical experience.
We strongly recommend that out-of-town participants arrive the day before, as we will start promptly at 9:00 AM. It would be a shame to miss the very important introduction to this seminar.
Hotel Organization
We offer hotel accommodation services. Please note that accommodation costs are NOT included in the seminar fee!
A block of rooms has been reserved at the conference hotel for your convenience.
For groups of three or more participants from the same company, the European Mainframe Academy will cover the accommodation costs and handle the booking centrally.
