In 2001, the IT-Akademie Bayern in Augsburg trained numerous students during a one-year period of fulltime face-to-face involvement. This procedure had a severe impact on their employing companies though, where an already existing shortage of expert staff got worse, since the colleagues in training could not be involved in company projects during this time.

Professor Wolfgang Spruth (Universität Leipzig), Wolfram Greis (TPS-DATA) and Volker Falch (IT-Akademie Bayern) on numerous occasions discussed various ideas of how to design Mainframe training for much needed junior staff to be more efficient and more cost effective. At the time new technologies had come up, that made it possible to replace the “classic” training by much more efficient techniques involving the concept of participants and lecturers not having to be in the same place for every class.

Over time this vision became refined and defined, among other things through intensive conversations with customers and manufacturers, notably with IBM.

The idea became reality when in 2007 the EMA I European Mainframe Academy GmbH was founded with headquarters in Augsburg and EMA I European Mainframe Academy AG with offices in Switzerland. EMA now aimed at training Mainframe junior staff based on the concept of „Blended Learning“, involving experienced and competent lecturers and partners.

The method of „Blended Learning“ is not clearly specified. EMA defines it as a mix of attendance time, when participants and lecturers actually meet for workshops and virtual distance learning, when participants and lecturers actually cooperate from different locations.

In October 2008 the first two-year training „EMA Certified IBM Mainframe System Specialist“ got under way. To this day numerous courses for System Specialists and Operators have been conducted, training participants sent by renowned companies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Feedback of EMA graduates and their companies are consistently included in the further development of the concept, making it a continuously updated program.
