Supported by IBM, Leipzig University is operating a mainframe, currently a z9, featuring about every software operable on the mainframe. Cooperation with IBM provides an exceptional hands-on training approach offering unique opportunities.
The systems are virtualised with z/VM, whereas not only Linux is virtually built under System x but also z/OS systems. In specific modules, small groups of students can be provided with z/OS systems they can start and shut down any number of times – a feature much appreciated in operator training. The concept also provides unprecedented opportunities to the training of system administrators, for example in the case of security modules, when students can be granted full authorization without risking that possible faulty actions might interfere with others.
